The Doctrine of God’s Providence–Part Two

Posted: October 21, 2008 in Uncategorized

Let’s talk briefly about the Decrees of God.  Dr. Grudem writes, “[t]he decrees of God are the eternal plans of God whereby, before the creation of the world, he determined to bring about everything that happens.”  In other words, decrees of God concern “God’s decisions before the world was created.” See Scriptures like Ps. 139:16 and Acts 2:23.   What is mind blowing is that even our salvation was determined “before the foundation of the world” (Eph. 1:4).  Even our “[o]ur good works as believers are those ‘which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Eph. 2:10; cf. Jude 4).”  If you find this distasteful then I would challenge you to ask yourself why? Is it because you want to be in control? Is it because you have tried to “tame God”?  Do you need to pray to trust God more? God has determined the beginning from the end and, like all things that God does, we need to trust that it is right and just.

Does this mean that human actions don’t count? We’ll hit that later.
