Ask Pastor Matt 2

Here is another question I received last night.

John 4:24 says, “God is spirit & those who worship him must worship in spirit & in truth.” On several occasions, before the worship music, you have said “If there aren’t words coming out of your mouth, you’re not worshiping.”

In light of John 4:24, isn’t it possible for someone to be standing or sitting or praying or meditating without words coming out of there mouth, yet still be worshiping?

The most oft repeated command in Scripture is to pray and the second is to sing.  From Psalm 33 to Ephesians 5 to Revelation, the Bible implores us to sing praises to our God.  The triune creator and sustainer of the universe wants us to come together and sing to the heavenly throne.

There is nothing wrong with meditating on a song but its not so much worship in the strict sense as it is personal meditation.  Such an approach also may easily slide into worship becoming a concert.

So, brothers and sisters, sing!
