Ask Pastor Matt 3

Please continue to pray for Kenny Hempill every day.  Pray hard and pray often!

Okay, back to some of the questions I received last Sunday night during our latest installment of “Ask Pastor Matt” at Revolution (which is now its tre cool location at 315 Chillicothe Street in Portsmouth…sorry for that shameless plug).

“Is it okay to re-marry if your ex-spouse is still alive? Are there any verses in the Bible that say it’s okay or not?”

It is important to note that the Bible does not present a comprehensive answer to the various and sometimes complex issues surrounding divorce.  God is clear that he hates divorce (Malachi 2:16) but the Bible still recognizes that there are grounds for the termination of a marriage.  Here are a few:

1) Jesus taught that a believer should never divorce his or her wife except in cases of porneia or sexual immorality (Matt. 5:32; 19:9).  Porneia includes adultery of all kinds including pornography.  Traditionally, the church has interpreted his teaching to mean that one cannot marry an adulterer but that the innocent party is free to re-marry.

2) The death of a spouse frees one to re-marry (Romans 7:1-3 and 1 Cor. 7:39).

 3) Paul taught that when a non-Christian divorces a Christian then the Christian is free to divorce (1 Cor. 7:15).

All that being said, it is important to remember that reconciliation is always preferred (1 Cor. 7:11) but, unfortunately, is not always an option.

More later.  Until then, grace and peace.
