Sex is Awesome! (Song of Songs 1:1-4)

Posted: May 11, 2010 in Uncategorized

Historically, the church has had a warped view of sex. Take a look at these quotes from 19th century Christians…

“On the negative side, there is the wedding night, during which the bride must pay the piper, so to speak, by facing for the first time the terrible experience of sex. At this point, dear reader, let me concede one shocking truth. Some young women actually anticipate the wedding night ordeal with curiosity and pleasure! Beware such an attitude! A selfish and sensual husband can easily take advantage of such a bride. One cardinal rule of marriage should never be forgotten: GIVE LITTLE, GIVE SELDOM, AND ABOVE ALL, GIVE GRUDGINGLY. Otherwise what could have been a proper marriage could become an orgy of sexual lust.”

Treatise on marriage from 1894.

Here is another from a British aristocrat:

“I am happy now that Charles calls on my bedchamber less frequently than of old. As it is, I now endure but two calls a week and when I hear his steps outside my door I lie down on my bed, close my eyes, open my legs and think of England.”

Wow!

But God created sex and He created it to be shared between a husband and wife and to be enjoyed by both!

The Song of Songs is a book of Scripture wholly devoted to sex!

It is a strange book because it is essentially a very old song and, like most old songs, sound strange to future generations but it is a song written by God about sex!

Let’s take a look:

Song of Songs 1:1-4:

1:1 The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s.

The Bride Confesses Her Love

She

2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth!
For your love is better than wine;
3 your anointing oils are fragrant;
your name is oil poured out;
therefore virgins love you.
4 Draw me after you; let us run.
The king has brought me into his chambers.

Others

We will exult and rejoice in you;
we will extol your love more than wine;
rightly do they love you.

Okay, 1:2 the Hebrew word translated as “love” means “making love” and it all starts with long, wet kisses.

Okay, here is shocking truth for all of you…ready?…men and women are different…no, really!

When it comes to sex, women need a reason while  men just need a place!  Women need to be romanced, warmed up, etc.  On the other hand, a man’s version of foreplay is dropping his pants and asking, “Do you wanna?”

Husbands, kiss your wives!  Kiss them often and kiss them passionately.  Warm up by kissing.  Trust me. Scripture doesn’t lie!

Also, for kissing to be really good, invest in breath mints!  And brush your teeth…regularly!  Also, shave.  A lot of girls don’t want to kiss sandpaper or a chia pet!

Look at 1:3 she loves the way he smells and he has a great reputation, which makes him attractive.  Dudes, don’t come home from playing b-ball with your boys are sweaty and smelling like a foot and then expect her to fall all over you.  Take a shower…with soap…and water.  Wash everywhere!

Invest in cologne and let her pick it out.  I mean what do you care what you smell like as long as she is happy? Right?

Also, have a good reputation.  Be a good dude–an honest, hard-working, considerate man.  I know that a lot of girls like jerks but, frankly, those girls are crazy.  So, if you’re single, pass those girls by no matter how hot they are and pray that they get over their daddy issues.

1:4 the bride becomes aggressive…nothing wrong with that! Wives, you can pursue your husbands and if they resist then I’ll personally take away their man card!

Throughout the Song of Songs there is this deep longing that the husband and wife have for each other.  This kind of longing can only be healthy when God is at the center of your life.   When you are defined by Jesus then you can truly serve your husband or wife and love him or her and not be defined by them, which just leads to an emotional roller coaster.

The only way to have real romance and great sex is to be defined by Jesus, which frees you to truly love another instead of being an insecure co-dependent train wreck!

1:5-8 next week!
