What are Ex-Emergents Doing Now?

Posted: November 23, 2010 in Uncategorized

The Emergent Church (i.e., the liberal wing of the late ’90’s cool church movement) is slowly dying.  Authors like Brian McLaren, Doug Pagitt and Tony Jones don’t sell books like they used to and the conferences, dubbed theological conversations, don’t creat much buzz any more.  Ah! but once upon a time it was all the rage especially among young, disgruntled evangelicals. So, where did the crowds of tattooed, U2 listening, imported beer sipping Christians go?

If I had to guess, I would say probably right now they are…

Stuffing their Obama Hope & Change tees in storage bins somewhere between their battered Creed shirt bought as a teen and the V-neck from Urban Outfitter that doesn’t really fit anymore (darn you Guinness for producing love handles!).

Occassionally wondering into a mainline church and reflecting on the beauty of the high church eucharist and the wonderous unity of the lectionary before going home to play Call of Duty: Black Ops or watch Dexter on Showtime.

Still blaming Bush for everything.

Rolling their eyes at the unwashed masses who do things like shop at Wal-Mart, drive SUV’s and…work.

Occassionally still praying for truly important things…like NPR to retain it’s federal funding.

Still working on their dissertation promoting neo-Marxism when they’re not in a Starbucks with their Macbooks.

Illegally downloading the last Arcade Fire or Mumford & Sons release in order to truly stick it to the man!

Watching The Athiest Tapes on Netflix Instant in their Mom’s basement while she’s at work…or church.

Rubbing their sore feet after realizing too late that Tom’s are not ideal for walking more than 1/4 mile.

Still fine tuning their blog review of Inception…and

Still absolutely certain that nobody really knows anything!

There by the grace of God go I!
