Carl Henry was Pimp

Posted: December 1, 2010 in Uncategorized

I read over at Jesus Creed that a fairly well-known “progressive evangelical” blogger will be blogging through the first section of Karl Barth’s massive and influential theological work Church Dogmatics. Barth was famous for infuriating liberals and conservatives alike by elevating divine revelation (kind of) but also embracing universalism (i.e., everyone goes to heaven).   I began reading Church Dogmatics this year before I realized that it was a major waste of time and, as a working pastor, I would better served studying anti-Barths like John Stott, George Eldon Ladd and Carl F.H. Henry.

It then occurred to me that next year marks the 35th anniversary of the publication of Carl Henry’s initial volume of his 6-part work God, Revelation & Authority.  If you’re not familiar with Carl Henry, and relatively few young evangelical are, he was an agnostic journalist who found Christ at age 20, earned two doctorates, taught at Fuller Seminary, served as founding editor of Christianity Today and penned a handful of influential books.

So, I am pronouncing 2011 the year of Carl Henry and will be blogging through God, Revelation & Authority. If you would like to follow along then save up at least $100 and buy the 6-volume set.  We will begin working through the massive work in January.  I guarantee that you won’t regret it…after all, Carl Henry was a pimp!

BTW, if you are new to the Pastor Matt blog, “pimp” is the highest compliment you can receive!

Grace and peace,
