Politics According to the Bible–The Media & Political Parties

Wayne Grudem argues in Chapters 16 of his new book Politics According to the Bible (Zondervan 2010) that citizens should demand that media outlets drop their liberal bias because it prevents so many from knowing the truth.  Grudem cites a Pew Survey demonstrating that nearly 80% of all journalists identify themselves as left of the political center while only 17% of Americans describe themselves as liberal.

Grudem asserts that an informed citizenry is vital to democracy but that leftists journalists distort facts in order to influence the electorate.  For example, the 2008 economic meltdown was blamed on Wall Street and the lack of proper government regulation but this patently false.  The root cause goes back to the Carter Administration and the eventual establishment of Freddy Mac and Fannie Mae.  The government pushed risky loans as part of an affirmative action plan and it eventually backfired nearly taking down all financial institutions with it, which caused a ripple throughout the economy creating 10% unemployment, which, again hurts who? The poor!

So, because the media refused to lay the blame at the feet of the liberal policies that actually created the mess, a good deal of our nation’s voters were not told the truth when they voted and the real cause of the economic collapse has yet to be dealt with.

Grudem goes in Chapter 17 to anticipate criticism that he is shelling for the Republican Party.  Grudem notes, as I have on this blog, that Christians should not be tagged as partisan just because we live in a two-party nation where one party’s platform stands for life, marriage, religious freedom, etc. and the other doesn’t.

It would have been nice for Grudem to touch on William Wilberforce who refused to join a party during his political career but also refused to cave on his principles in regards to the abolition of slavery.  I personally believe Christians need to make it very clear that we will support whoever stands for life, marriage and liberty regardless of party.

Check in later as we wrap up Grudem’s book.
