Free Seminary Update

Posted: January 18, 2011 in Uncategorized

Revolution Church will kick off its Free Seminary on Saturday morning, January 29th at 8:00 a.m.  Anyone interested should be in attendance for an orientation that will last roughly an hour.  Coffee & Donuts will be provided (nothing like caffeine and deep-fried dough to get you to Jesus a little more quickly!).

The Leadership Team at Revolution Church decided to establish the Free Seminary as a means of discipleship for those who wish to dig deeper into the faith.  The seminary will offer at least 3 classes per semester with each term lasting 13 weeks including a one week break.

Those wishing to earn a certificate of completion must complete 12 classes (4 in Biblical theology, 4 in systematic & historical theology and 4 in practical or pastoral theology).  Additional classes may be offered for those wish to go beyond the 12-class minimum requirement for a certificate of completion.

Students will NOT be required to produce papers or to take tests.  Instead, students will have assigned readings, which they will discuss with the instructor during class times.  If a student cannot make a class then they must work out a time to cover the materials at the instructor’s convenience.

All classes are graded pass/fail.  One must read all the assignments and engage in class discussions to the instructor’s satisfaction to earn a passing mark.

This semester will begin with orientation on Saturday, January 29th at 8:00 a.m. and classes to follow the week of the 30th.  I (Pastor Matt) will be teaching Systematic Theology I at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays at Revolution Church beginning January 30th.  Dave Dunham will be teaching The Gospel at Revolution Church on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m.  Dr. Frank Tallerico will be teaching Christian Spiritual Formation at Revolution Church on Saturdays at 8:00 a.m.  We will have a midterm break March 13-19th.  Classes for Spring term will end the last week of April.

The textbooks for each class are as follows:

Systematic Theology I (Rawlings) Sundays at 10:30 a.m.   Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem (Zondervan 1994)

The Gospel (Dunham) Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m.  Death by Love by Mark Driscoll and Gerry Breshears (Crossway 2008)

Christian Spiritual Formation (Tallerico) Saturdays at 8:00 a.m. Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Donald Whitney. (Nav Press 1991).

Also, each student should own a copy of the ESV Study Bible (Crossway) and bring it to each class.

If you are not able to attend the orientation on January 29th then you will need to arrange to meet with me (Pastor Matt) as soon as possible for about an hour.  Anyone is welcome to attend my classes on Sunday mornings regardless of whether you have registered for the free seminary or not, however, only those who have registered may participate in the class discussions.

Also, one may take as many or as few classes as they wish but they must register to do so and there are very few spots left.

For those taking Systematic Theology I, read chapters 1-3 for the first class on January 30th.
